Volunteer Offshore Surveyors Wanted

The IWDG is compiling a list of people who are prepared to work as voluntary cetacean surveyors on board research vessels operating within Irish waters. We are looking to hear from people who have cetacean survey experience (land or sea based) and who have or are prepared to obtain an ENG11 Marine Medical certificate and an STCW95 Sea Survival Certificate.

Surveyor positions would be voluntary and volunteers would have to cover their own expenses in terms of getting to and from the research vessels (in Irish ports) and obtaining an ENG11 Marine Medical Certificate and STCW95 Sea Survival Certificate.Accommodation and meals will be provided free of charge on board the survey ships for the duration of the surveys. Surveys will typically last for 2-3 weeks.

While we appreciate that participation will involve a cost to volunteers, it will also provide an excellent opportunity for budding cetacean biologists and more seasoned surveyors, to gain important experience in offshore cetacean surveys. The IWDG will provide information and guidance on survey techniques and will also provide surveyors with the necessary equipment for data collection.

If you are interested and available to conduct voluntary surveys within the coming 12 months and would like to be added to our notification list, please email dave.wall@iwdg.ie with your CV and a brief outline of why you would like to be a volunteer surveyor for the IWDG.

Please note that you will be required to provide copies of the relevant certificates prior to going to sea, however you do not need to currently hold the certificates to be added to our notification list.
