Following a lengthy tendering and evaluation process, Clare Local Development Company have announced that they are able to grant aid the IWDG 75% towards the refit of Celtic Mist.
Clare Local Development Company administer LEADER funds in County Clare and have approved the IWDG application for support. The grant is worth up to 47,900 euro and without this support the IWDG would not have been able to turn the ketch into a whale and dolphin research vessel.
The hull and general condition of the vessel is sound but there is a list of small maintenance jobs and some conversion if the vessel is to be able to carry a compliment of six scientists and skipper and crew.
The biggest job is to recaulk the wooden teak deck and to convert the "Admirals" cabin formerly used by Charles Haughey from a double bunk, bath and shower to a skippers single cabin and two additional berths. this wil increase the capacity from six to eight berths.
The refit is being carried out in Kilrush Boat Yard by Cathal Blunnie who has sub-contracted work to local craftsmen as well as Tom Hand from Dingle, co Kerry.
The IWDG are seeking volnteer labour to help refit the vessel and all are welcome to get involved. It is hoped to get Celtic Mist back on the water in May for an official lunch in June.
Following its relaunch Celtic Mist has a number of engagements including a research cruise to the edge of the continental shelf this summer in search of offshore bottlenose dolphins and fin whales.
IWDG need to raise 25% of the refit costs which is around 17,000 euro. We encourage those interested in supporting this project to purchase a Celtic Mist certificate forthemselves and their friends which not only funds the refit but entitles them to a complimentary day trip on the new vessel, see www.rvcelticmist.ie for details.
It is a hugely exciting time for the IWDG and all members are encouraged to get involved in not only the refit but the running of RV Celtic Mist. For more details on the schedule and running of Celtic Mist see www.rvcelticmist.ie
