8th Oct 2010 Fundraising for Whale Pontoon for Co. Galway

UPDATE 8 October

Monty Halls handed over only the third set of whale pontoons in Ireland at the recent public talk in the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology.

The pontoons were raised by Monty with support from IWDG members in Ireland and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) and Marine Conservation Society (MCS) in the UK. The pontoons will be stored at Atlantiquarium in Galway City for easy access in the event of a live-stranding.

UPDATE 30 September

The €5,000 euro needed to purchase Galways first set of whale pontoons has been raised thanks to Monty Halls wildlife and Dive festival in Roundstone and his sponsored row as well as donations from IWDG members and the WDCS and MCS in the UK.

IWDG wish to thank Monty and his team and our colleagues in the UK for their support.

The pontoons will be handed over to the IWDg at the public talk on 7 October in GMIT, Galway (see article above)

UPDATE 27 September

Monty Halls completed the 23.4 mile row termed the "Aran Sweater", in 7 hours 30 minutes to raise money to purchase a whale pontoon.

We are just 700 euro short of the price of a pontoon, any donations will be gratefully received.

UPDATE 18 September

The "Aran Sweater", a 24 mile row from the Aran Islands to Roundstone to raise money to purchase a whale pontoon for Co. Galway will take place this Monday 20 September.

Monty Halls will attempt this mighty row as part of his Great Irish Escape TV series for the BBC. Anybody wishing to sponsor Monty can go to http://www.mycharity.ie/event/aransweater. I'm sure the locals will be out in force to welcome Monty into Roundstone after this epic journey!

UPDATE 11 September

The Wildlife and Dive festival raised 2,000 euro for the whale pontoon. With a cost of around 5,000 euro we are nearly half- way to making this target a reality. Thank you to all who supported this event.

UPDATE 5 September

To raise funds to purchase a whale pontoon for re-floating stranded cetaceans Monty Halls is undertaking a sponsored row. Called the "Aran sweater" Monty intends rowing from the Aran Islands to Roundstone a distance of 24 miles in a currach.

According to local knowledge this has not been attempted in modern times and Monty will probably find out why !! Monty Halls has been working with the IWDG since April as part of his latest film project "Monty Halls Great Irish Escape". he has been carrying out surveys and research for the IWDG in Conamara and his adventures will be broadcast next March on BBC over six episodes.

If just over 200 people sponsored Monty one euro each mile he rowed we would soon make it to the 5000 euro needed to buy the pontoon.
