IWDG at CFT Dive Ireland- UPDATED 3 March 2010

23rd Feb 2010 Update 3 March 2010

Last weekend IWDG was part of a very successful Dive Show in The Slieve Russell Hotel, Cavan. The IWDG's stand was just one of many which attracted divers from Sub-aqua clubs representing the four corners of Ireland and of all ages. Gerry Healy and myself heard some great stories from some divers of previous sightings and of course encouraged more sighting reports to be made to the group! The photograph below looks a young visitor to the stand enjoying the killer Whale (Orca) skull.

Whilst manning the IWDG stand we were fortunate to get to hear a few of the many organised talks over the two days. One was from Monty Halls talking about his adventures around the world, with his next series coming from the West of Ireland this year. Also a very interesting presentation on the Basking Shark Project from National Parks and Wildlife Service Conservation Ranger and IWDG member Emmett Johnston. Information on the project can be viewed on www.baskingshark.ie.

Also of interest was the “Sea search” project for divers who want to do more for their marine environment details at www.seasearch.org.uk. There was also a stand from University College Cork describing the research being carried out on Sea turtles and Jellyfish in Irish waters, information at www.Jellfish.ie.

Some wonderful photos recently taken of the Humpback in Wexford breaching and feeding were a hit with many.

A big thank you to all who spoke with us over the two days, and for their interest in membership and how they can contribute to the group's work.
