Cape Verde 2006: Irish humpback whale expedition obtain first fluke image

2nd Mar 2006 Despite a large swell rolling into the island of Boavista the Irish humpback whale expedition to Cape Verde manage to obtain their first fluke image of an adult female. She was first seen breaching and banging her pectoral fins onto the waters surface. The research vessel RV Adrainna managed to approach withing 50m and obtain an photograph of her fluke. She was accompanoied by a calf, possibly this years. The whale did not approach close enough to obtain a biopsy sample.
